What Is the Difference Between A Developer And a Designer?

In building websites for around 20 years, one of the most popular questions I receive is, “Are you a web developer or a web designer?” My answer lies somewhere in-between… I am a “hybrid designer”!

Is it possible to be both? It is not so common. Most tend to favor one or the other. The fact remains… to build a website, you need both design and development. I happen to be the type of person who actively switches between left and right brain activities. I love to get my creative design on… and I love to geek out crunching code.

Web design involves:

  • Creating the look and feel of the website (the front end)
  • Designing a creative solution to meet the client’s requirements
  • Focusing on the end user’s experience
  • Working with HTML, CSS and JavaScript
  • Using design software like Photoshop or Illustrator

Web development involves:

  • Adding complex functionality to the website (the back end)
  • Creating user interactivity features
  • Acute attention to detail
  • Using programming languages like Java, PHP, etc.
  • Using development tools like Visual Studio, Smultron, etc.

I do not claim to be the world’s best developer or designer. But I have dabbled in both enough over the last 20 years or so to have half a clue what I am doing! 🙂
